How To Use Perfume

April 4th, 2008

Perfume has been used for centuries to arouse people’s senses and to evoke certain feelings with each breath. The range of scents is enormous and not all smells apply the same to all people, smells in some parts of the world would sicken people in others. Many people have walked into a room or other closed space, like an elevator and immediately been confronted by the overwhelming odor of someone wearing too much perfume. Headaches and nausea or extreme, but not uncommon reactions to these overpowering smells. Knowing how to use your perfume is just as important as knowing which one to pick in the first place.

The Right Scent

Not all scents are good for all people. You can get the most expensive products, but if it is not right for you, then it will just not work. Certain perfumes work best for certain people. Picking the right smell also depends on the occasion. A perfume which is intended to keep you smelling good for the day is completely different from the perfume you use to seduce your lover.

Sampling some perfumes at the department store is a great way to start. The sales people at the counters are usually more than willing to help you out and find the right fragrance for you. Don’t try all of the perfumes in one day, but take your time to sample some, try them out, and then experiment with some more. You’ll find that certain fragrances will blend with your body better than others, although the recommendation of the people at the department store might be good, only you will really know how it smells through your day or on the occasion it is meant for.

Scents are divided into categories. Some scents are floral, some are woody, others are blended. By finding out what type of scent you want you can quickly decide which perfumes are not good for you. Asking a professional to tell you about these differences can be great for helping you find out more.

Applying Perfume

You’ve picked the perfect smell, but you need to put it on. It is of vital importance that you don’t put on too much. The smell should not be overpowering, but people should be able to smell it as they pass by you, just enough to please. Putting a drop at the pulse points on the neck and wrists has always been a popular choice. Another option is to spray it into the air and walk through it, so as to get a complete scent all over the body. Other scents can be applied to the hair, the advantage of this is that the smell is not mixed with the natural odor of the body and maintains its own smell better.

Mixing scents is not advised. Most have been designed to work on their own. Remember that shampoos and soaps have their own odors too. Using unscented version of these products will help to keep the effect of the perfume strong.

A scent that is noticeable, but not overpowering, will win anyone over.
