Antique Perfume Bottles

There are a great number of different perfume bottles, at least as many as there are different fragrances, and possibly more. Although the perfumes themselves vary little over time, with many of the big brands having become famous for their distinctive smells, it is often the shape of a new bottle that helps to boost sales and make the difference between one perfume and the other. One of the major manufacturers of perfume bottles is Pochet SA, which is a French company.

Givenchy, Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Coty and Calvin Klein are amongst the huge number of perfume manufacturers who has their perfume bottles made by Pochet SA. The company was founded by Verreries du Courval and Pochet DeRoche and they both have many years of experience in glass and porcelain design. Their heritage goes back a long way, and in fact the first bottle of designer perfume that was commissioned by the Empress Eugenie in 1858 was the work of Verreries du Courval.

The techniques uses in the making of perfume bottles have changed a bit since that time. Most of the bottles are made by machines and the inspiration for their shapes come from Hollywood. In the thirties however, there was a bottle made by a company called Lalique, subsequently bought by Pochet, that contained a the 1932 classic scent by Je Reviens that resembled a skyscraper from New York and came in a chrome finished box.

Many of these classic perfume bottles continue to hold appeal long after the fragrance that once filled the bottle is gone. In fact, many of the better bottles go on to become classics, often able to fetch quite a bit of money at auctions. The rarest of the these bottles are highly sought after by perfume bottle collectors.

Overseas destinations like Europe can be great places to seek out perfume bottles for your perfume bottle collection. You will often be able to find them in antiques stores, but don’t expect to pick up any great deals, some of these bottles will set you back a small fortune, so do your homework before buying one and make sure it is worth your cash. If you do make the right choice, it will become a treasure that you will value.

There are other places to find these perfume bottles besides antique stores. Yard sales, flea markets, thrift stores and Internet auctions can be great places for the antique hunter to find the perfume bottle of their choice.
